Iron infusion is a medical procedure in which iron is delivered to your body intravenously. It’s also known as an intravenous (IV) infusion.
Iron infusions are used to treat iron deficiency anemia, a condition characterized by low levels of iron in the body and a reduced ability to produce red blood cells. Iron deficiency anemia is typically treated with dietary changes and iron supplements that you take in pill form. In some cases, though, doctors may recommend iron infusions instead.
You may need an IV infusion under the following conditions:
– Oral administration of iron is not possible.
– Iron is not absorbed well in the intestines.
– lack sufficient iron due to blood loss
– To avoid medical complications or a blood transfusion, it is important to increase iron levels quickly.
Infusion of iron can take several hours to complete. You will need to remain seated for the duration of the treatment. In some cases, the infusion may take longer, depending on the dosage prescribed by your health professional. The slow infusion rate helps prevent complications.
It takes several iron infusions to bring the body’s iron levels up to the appropriate levels. You will receive your infusions over the course of one or a few weeks, depending on how long it takes to get your iron back to normal levels. Iron infusions are more expensive than other types of anemia treatment but worth it if you have severe anemia.
An iron infusion is a way to quickly increase the body’s iron levels. It’s a more immediate treatment than supplements or dietary changes; thus, it can be very helpful in situations where anemia is severe.
If you’re iron deficient, an iron infusion can help alleviate symptoms like fatigue and shortness of breath. You will begin to notice these benefits several weeks after your final treatment and they should last a long time as long as you are not using any other methods to increase your iron level.
For example, regular blood loss, such as that which occurs during menstruation, may lead to a chronic drop in iron levels. Depending on an individual’s situation, the benefits of an iron infusion may last anywhere from several months to a few years.
Your health professional may recommend supplementation and or dietary changes, which can prolong the benefits of iron therapy.
